Every day, WordPress emails me one writing prompt. Today’s writing prompt is:

If we were having coffee right now…

If we were having coffee right now, I would ask you how you are, how the family has been, and what you’ve been up to. I would ask if the move has been stressful, if you’re nervous for your first classes, or whether you’re happy with this job now, compared to the previous one where you burnt yourself with the instant-boiling water tap and dropped your boss’s mug of oat-milk coffee on the floor.

If we were having coffee right now, I would say I’m “not too shabby, thanks” and tell you about the slow job applying process (those cover letters, am I right?). I would say the writing is going well, in fact, writing for WhatCulture has been an incredible experience, and I’ve learnt so much about writing on the web. I would probably drop where my total view-count is now. Even though I brought it up, I’ll get awkward about it because I know I’m being arrogant. Still, why shouldn’t I be proud?

If we were having coffee right now, I would reminisce about times long ago. Remember getting stuck in that window? Or that guy from primary school who picked on us, but we survived him, and we’re doing just fine now thank you very much. We giggle over an in-joke, much to the bemusement of the staff and fellow coffee patrons.

If we were having coffee right now, I would say I’ve missed you. Lockdown has had its ups and downs. Sure, I’ve been able to speak to you on Messenger and WhatsApp, over text and Instagram, face-to-face via Zoom, Houseparty, and Skype, but it’s different being with you in the flesh. I like that we can enjoy a drink and a meal together. Yes, the service has been pretty good. Their social distancing practices are outstanding. I can fill in the track-and-trace form if you like. Yes, it’s been sad we can’t do this more often.

If we were having coffee right now, I would ask about your future plans. Have the new restrictions been an issue? How have you coped? Can comprehend the government’s new rules any more than I can? We talk about when to meet up next, realising that it might not be very soon, but we are the inbetweeners of Millennials and Generation-Z. We have mastered the art of online communication. We shall keep in touch.

It was nice talking to you. I’ll see you soon.

[9 minutes]

I’m taking the week off as I have an exam I’m spending the majority of my time preparing for – hopefully the last exam I’ll ever have to prepare for ever. Wish me luck!
