Every day, WordPress emails me one writing prompt. Today’s writing prompt is:
What Do You Do When You’re Not Writing?
While I’ve always wished I was an unstoppable writing machine, churning out thousands of words in a blink of an eye, I do enjoy my hobbies outside of work hours. And with lockdown measures being how they are (don’t ask me to explain them; I’m just as confused as everyone else), I’ve had plenty of free time to cash in.
I’ve been transcribing my old diary from 2015 into OneNote, and I’m somewhat relieved with how my free time use has changed. I was an avid cinephile back then and became concerned when I saw a list of five movies my past self had watched in one day. While I wrote about most of my film activities on my old Vinci’s Pick website, my movie marathons sometimes felt like a chore.
I still watch films nowadays and even broadcast my thoughts on the PatDav and Will: Movies and Chill radio show. We’re going through a bucket list of 100 must-watch movies, and with an Odeon Limitless card I can finally put into good use, I’m enjoying sitting in a somewhat empty cinema once a week, despite the lack of current choice.
I started baking over quarantine. I find cooking to be quite a relaxing, therapeutic activity, so kneading all my angst and stress I’ve accumulated over a heavy work week into dough is just the stress ball I need! Also, the new series of Bake-Off is just around the corner, and I’m sure I’ll feel less guilty ripping into contestants with a little baking knowledge under my belt.
Of course, as someone who writes about games, I play games. I don’t play as much as I used to (thankfully), and my playtime quality has increased. As a teen, I poured masses of time playing online, but now I prefer making my way through single-player campaigns. I recently restarted Skyrim again (one of my favourite games of all time), trying my hand at modding. Let me tell you this: you haven’t experienced Skyrim in all its glory until you’ve played with the bugs fixed and Inigo by your side.
I read at night; I am making my way through the Harry Potter books, and a fantastic newly published fiction by Matt Haig called The Midnight Library. While I wouldn’t label myself an introvert, I enjoy my time alone to sit with a hot drink and catch up on my YouTube subscriptions.
Would I change how I spend my time? Definitely. While I’ve loved my lockdown months with my family, I’ve missed the social life of the city. I want to meet friends, have my own place, and start working full-time. Recently, I’ve focused on swatting away pesky commitments that have hindered my job applying progress and creating more content. It feels like I’m on a threshold between the past section of my life and the next one. I’m just looking for a bridge to cross over the river or, if I have to, brace myself for a swim.
