Every day, WordPress emails me one writing prompt. Today’s writing prompt was to pick one of the images above. I went with:

The greyest stone; the chilly air,

Combine into a cruel affair.

I should be in bed, warm linen caressing

But I sit in this rough, scratchy dressing,

And I don’t want to be here.

I really dislike poetry, if you couldn’t already tell, because I want to write well

Without being bound to rules and regulations I barely understand.

The stand is filled, the headmaster addresses us.

Us. Not me.

Do not take my boredom for blasphemy; I appreciate everything you do –

From the warmest summer breeze, I am one of the many few

That appreciate Your work; thank you.

But it’s hard to appreciate the life and green,

When you’re stuck in this cold dark dreary skeleton.

The only warmth I find is in my coat and the memories of

My warm bed I left to grow dull and dead.

Rhyming is not my forte either

I mean what do you end here? Appeaser? Achiever? Neither?

Gosh, doesn’t he drone on? Unenthusiastic vibrations

Around a place so dead and stoic; I’m gone.

Let’s hurry this up, please, I have work to do today.

Well, I admit, I probably won’t do that work

Because a tough day I had yesterday. I had it rough.

It was my fault, really, staying up all night

Watching Eric Andre clips and horror movie death scenes

That give me a fright, because I’m too scared to watch them in the light.

One more hymn and we’re done –

Many already edge their souls towards the door.

Is this really how you hope to keep us forevermore?

This cold affront that most don’t even have the time to ignore?

They just forget.

Convince us we’re worthy to be with you, Lord?

Because it’s not working. Trust me, I hear them yawn

While I speak to you every night. I am ashamed to do it in the day.

I’m sorry, I know it’s not the way you

Want to be treated. I feel deceitful.

We’re up now, leaving for class.

I don’t have you in the timetable tomorrow. Maybe Friday? Okay?

I’ll be back, even when I’m not scheduled.

Because even though it’s cold and dark and somewhat damp.

You provide a lamp that keeps me centred, I think.

Take care, although I’m not technically leaving you behind.

You’re always with me, even when I find

Your presence to probably be a bit awkward.

Take care, I’ll see you in two days time.

[15 minutes]

Well that was different! I don’t think I’ve written poetry since primary school. If you want to read more structured personal thoughts, be sure to check out the other Everyday Inspiration on the site. Til tomorrow!
