Every day, WordPress emails me one writing prompt. Today’s writing prompt is:

Take a Cue from Your Reader

I asked my Instagram followers for inspiration. After trawling through numerous lewd suggestions, I decided on Chloe McLaughlin’s suggestion (thanks Chloe!)

Write something that isn’t corona related

This is a tough one. Seriously, what do I have left if I can’t talk about Corona? Corona has taken up so much of my time and money. Of course, I’m sure it’s affected many people, sometimes not in the best of ways, but I have to admit that I have fond memories of Corona. Of course, when a bottle only cost £1.30 at my old fresher’s bar, how could it not be love at first sight?

I admit, when I became of drinking age, I usually gravitated towards whatever was cold and cheap. Herefordshire has one of the lowest pint prices in the UK, so my criteria were easily satisfied. It sends shivers down my spine to recall that Becks was my favourite alcoholic drink. Saying this, going out with friends, I couldn’t go wrong ordering a pint of Stowford Press at the jewel of Hereford’s drinking spots: The Barrels.

Moving to Manchester, my palate opened up to the variety of drinks the great Northern city had to offer. I realised on my first night out that buying a full pint on a dance-floor is an accident waiting to happen. I moved onto spirits and liquors, cocktails and fishbowls, yet nothing caught my attention quite like the sweet sensation of a cold Corona.

A happy boy with his Corona.

The perfect Corona has some prerequisites: it must be served icy, as anyone will tell you luke-warm beer is like drinking water from the River Irwell. A lime completes this perfect elixir, as the first few sips wake up your taste buds with a gratifying zing.

There are dangers to bottle-drinking, however. Too much motion and you’re seconds away from creating a volcano of sticky, limey mess. Others may try and speed up that process by knocking the top of the bottle with the bottom of another. In one instance, my friend smacked the neck of my bottle so hard that it shattered. It was the most significant loss and betrayal of my life.

Not everywhere serves Corona, but never fret! There are substitutes. Sol is also great with a lime, and Desperados provide a more alcoholic-heavy tequila-laced alternative. Over the years, my tastes have evolved; I am always eager to try new pale ales, bitters, and pilsners. Yet there will always be a special place in my heart on a sunny day, sitting on the grass, watching the world lazily flow by, for that intoxicating taste of a Corona.

To any Corona executives reading, yes I will accept your sponsorship and year’s supply for this free advertising.

Thanks for the cue, Chloe. I hope this is a change of pace from reading about a virus all day. At least I hope you were referring to the pandemic and not the drink, otherwise this would be a very awkward read for you indeed…
